How To Use A Tampon

Choose the right tampon for you

Playtex® offers several different types of tampons based on your unique needs and preferences.

Choose the right absorbency for you

You should always select for the lowest absorbency you need to control your flow. If your flow is light to medium, try Regular absorbency tampons. If medium to heavy, try using Super or Super Plus absorbency. If you’re not sure where to start or it’s your first time trying a tampon, try Regular absorbency tampons. You may need to use different absorbencies throughout your cycle, so pay attention to how your flow changes over time. Remember to change your tampon every 4-8 hours.

The anatomy of a tampon

A tampon is made up of 2 parts: the tampon itself that you insert into your body, and the applicator you use to insert it. The tampon is made of absorbent material with a string attached so you can remove it easily. All Playtex® applicators have a smooth, comfortable barrel that contains the tampon within it, attached is a smaller tube below called a plunger. Below is a diagram of a tampon with an applicator:

Getting started

Relax. Easier said than done, but it is easier to insert a tampon when you are relaxed. It usually takes a few tries before being able to comfortably insert a tampon, so don't worry if you don’t get it right away. Refer to the instructions and diagrams so you know what to do.

Instructions for how to insert a tampon

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, and then unwrap the tampon. The applicator tip should be rounded and the strings should hang out the bottom of the applicator. If you notice any flaws, do not use it, and throw it away in a wastebasket.
  2. Gently pull on the strings to make sure they are firmly attached.
  3. Get comfortable. Try sitting on the toilet with knees apart or standing with one foot on the toilet seat. Take a few deep breaths to relax if you are nervous.
  4. Gently insert the tampon applicator into your vagina:

    a. Hold the finger grip of the applicator using your thumb and middle finger.

   5. After you have inserted the tampon, place the used applicator back into the wrapper and throw away in a wastebasket. DO NOT FLUSH THE PLASTIC APPLICATOR.

Any discomfort or leaks? The tampon may not be far enough inside. If this happens, just remove the tampon and try again with a new one. You won't feel anything when the tampon is correctly in place.
